The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) said it has appointed Ms Martin as its chief executive officer.
A former journalist, Ms Martin led Labor to power in 2001 in the Territory and became its first female chief minister.
The 56-year-old won two elections and led the government until last year, when she stepped down in the wake of the federal intervention in NT indigenous communities.
“ACOSS is delighted to have a driven, motivated and highly skilled person to lead ACOSS into the future to achieve our vision of a fair, inclusive and sustainable Australia,” the council said.
