NT permit system fails to halt grog

CLAIMS by the Rudd Government that the permit system plays a crucial role in keeping alcohol out of Aboriginal lands are not supported by police statistics, which reveal that Aborigines are overwhelmingly the Northern Territory's leading grog-runners.

Figures obtained by The Australian show the great majority of people summonsed or arrested for bringing liquor into alcohol-restricted communities in the Territory in the past 15 months were Aborigines who did not need permits to enter their land.
